“Some call it oral sleep appliance, some call it mouth guard to treat sleep apnea”.
Which is the correct term?
The correct term for a dental device used to treat sleep apnea or snoring is typically “mandibular advancement splint” (MAS) or “oral sleep appliance.” These terms specifically refer to devices designed to address sleep-related breathing disorders by repositioning the lower jaw (mandible) forward during sleep, helping to keep the airway open.
While the term “mouth guard” is sometimes used informally to refer to these devices, it’s not the most accurate or specific descriptor. Mouth guards are more commonly associated with dental devices used for teeth grinding (bruxism) or sports protection. Using the term “mandibular advancement splint” or “oral sleep appliance” helps to clarify that the device is intended for treating sleep-related breathing disorders like obstructive sleep apnea and snoring.
CPAP therapy Vs Mandibular Advancement Splints (MAS)
CPAP therapy is highly effective for treating sleep apnea and snoring, especially for moderate to severe cases, but it requires consistent use and may be challenging for some individuals to tolerate. Mandibular advancement splints offer a more comfortable and portable alternative for individuals with mild to moderate OSA who cannot tolerate CPAP.
Inability to try Mandibular Advancement Splint MAS before purchasing can be a challenge for some
Unlike CPAP machines, which can typically be tried during a sleep study or a short-term rental period before committing to purchase, mandibular advancement splints (MAS) don’t offer the same opportunity for a trial period in most cases.
This lack of a trial period can indeed be a significant challenge for individuals considering MAS as a treatment option for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) or snoring. Without the ability to try the device before purchasing it, individuals may be hesitant to invest in something that they’re unsure will work for them or be comfortable to wear.
To address this challenge, provider of mandibular advancement splints – CLM Sleep Co. Kent Town, Adelaide (sleep clinic) offer a limited trial period or adjustment period for MAS.
